Interactive Brokers suits day traders who want direct order routing, low per-share costs, global markets and advanced order types. Use an IBKR Pro account (Lite doesn't give you routing control), choose fixed or tiered pricing based on your volume, subscribe to real-time data for your markets, and set up hotkeys and bracket orders in TWS or IBKR Desktop before trading live. Since the PDT rule ended in June 2026, intraday buying power depends on real-time margin, with brokers phasing in the change through October 2027.
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is one of the most widely used brokers among active traders, thanks to low costs, global access and professional-grade tools. It also has one of the steepest learning curves. Here's how to set it up for day trading.
IBKR Pro vs IBKR Lite
| IBKR Pro | IBKR Lite | |
|---|---|---|
| US stock commissions | Per-share (fixed or tiered) | $0 |
| Order routing | Smart routing or direct routing you choose | Routed to venues that may pay for order flow |
| Best for | Active day traders | Casual investors |
For day trading, Pro is the usual choice. Routing control and execution quality matter more than a $0 headline.
Fixed vs tiered pricing (Pro)
- Fixed: one per-share rate with a minimum per order, and most exchange fees included. Simple, and good for lower volume.
- Tiered: a lower per-share rate that falls with monthly volume, plus exchange, clearing and regulatory fees passed through. Liquidity-adding orders can earn rebates. Better for higher volume.
Compare using your real trade count and share size. IBKR's pricing pages list current rates. For small accounts trading small share sizes, per-order minimums matter more than the per-share rate.
Score the Setup Before You Take It

| Platform | Use |
|---|---|
| Trader Workstation (TWS) | The full professional platform: every order type, hotkeys, BookTrader ladder, algos |

Many day traders chart on TradingView and execute in TWS.
Set up before your first live trade
- Market data: subscribe to real-time data for the exchanges you trade (US stocks, options or futures). Without it, you'll see delayed quotes.
- Hotkeys: buy, sell, flatten, cancel all, and reverse, configured in TWS.
- Bracket orders: an entry with an attached stop and target. Make it the default.
- Order presets: default size based on your risk, time in force, outside-RTH permissions.
- Paper account: IBKR's paper account mirrors live order logic. Practise there for at least two weeks. See paper trading.
- Trade export: set up Flex Queries or reports so trades feed into your journal.
Margin and the end of the PDT rule
The pattern day trader rule and its $25,000 minimum ended on June 4, 2026, and brokers have until October 20, 2027 to implement the new intraday margin standard. Check IBKR's current notices for how your account's intraday buying power is calculated. Margin accounts still need at least $2,000. See day trading rules in the US.
IBKR is known for automatic liquidation: if your account falls below margin requirements, positions can be closed quickly without a traditional margin call. Keep a buffer.
Useful IBKR features for day traders
- Direct routing to specific exchanges (Pro).
- Short locates with borrow availability and fee information.
- Extended hours, including overnight trading in selected US stocks and ETFs.
- Conditional and algo orders, such as adaptive and VWAP algos.
- Global markets from one account: US, European and Asian stocks, futures and FX.
Common pitfalls
- Trading on delayed data by mistake.
- Using the mobile app for fast intraday trading.
- Ignoring per-order minimums on small positions.
- Getting auto-liquidated by running too close to margin limits.
- Not testing hotkeys in the paper account first.
Compare other options in best day trading platforms. TRADZY imports IBKR trades for journaling and scores setups before you enter, so your IBKR execution is paired with a measured process.
FAQ
Is Interactive Brokers good for day trading?
Yes, especially IBKR Pro, for traders who want routing control, low costs at volume, advanced orders and global markets. The platform has a learning curve.
IBKR Pro or Lite for day trading?
Pro. It gives you routing control and access to direct routing, which matter more to day traders than $0 commissions.
Do I need $25,000 to day trade on IBKR?
Not under FINRA rules since June 4, 2026, but brokers are phasing in the change through October 2027. Check IBKR's current policy for your account.
Does Interactive Brokers have a paper trading account?
Yes. IBKR offers paper accounts that mirror its live order types and platform.
Why did IBKR close my positions?
