Order flow is the real-time pressure of buyers vs sellers. When a large buy order hits the market, price often continues up (smart money is buying). When large sell orders hit, price often continues down (smart money is selling). Professional traders watch the bid-ask spread and trade size. Most retail traders ignore it and wonder why moves reverse on them.
- Large orders = smart money signal
- Buy-side pressure = uptrend continuation likely
- Sell-side pressure = downtrend continuation likely
- Watch the level 2 tape to see orders stacking
Order flow is the game behind the price chart. Price moves because of order flow imbalances.
Bid-ask spread
Every stock has a bid and an ask.
Bid: The price buyers are willing to pay (lower side)
Ask: The price sellers are willing to take (higher side)
| Bid | Ask | Spread |
|---|---|---|
| $100.00 | $100.01 | 1 cent (tight) |
| $100.00 | $100.05 | 5 cents (wide) |
| $100.00 | $100.10 | 10 cents (very wide) |
Tight spread (liquid): Many buyers and sellers, easy to execute.
Wide spread: Few buyers/sellers, hard to execute. Price is less certain.
The level 2 tape
Level 2 shows the bid and ask queues:
| Bid | Qty | Qty | Ask | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $99.99 | 500 | 1,000 | $100.01 | ||
| $99.98 | 1,000 | 2,000 | $100.02 | ||
| $99.97 | 2,000 | 5,000 | $100.03 | ||
| $99.96 | 5,000 | 10,000 | $100.04 |
Read: 500 shares want to buy at $99.99 (bid). 1,000 shares are for sale at $100.01 (ask).
If a large buy order hits the ask: Price moves up.
If a large sell order hits the bid: Price moves down.

Signal 1: Buyers "walking up" the ask
Large buy orders keep hitting $100.01, $100.02, $100.03...
Price is rising because buyers are aggressive.
Prediction: Price continues up (buy more).
Signal 2: Sellers "walking down" the bid
Large sell orders keep hitting $99.99, $99.98, $99.97...
Price is falling because sellers are aggressive.
Prediction: Price continues down (sell more).
Signal 3: Big size on one side
10,000 shares on the ask, 500 on the bid.
Sellers have all the size.
Prediction: Price likely to test the bid (down).
Signal 4: Tremors before the move
Size suddenly appears (1,000s of shares) on the bid or ask.
Next, price moves hard in that direction.
Prediction: Smart money is stepping in. Follow that side.
Order flow and support/resistance
A support level looks attractive because:
- Buyers see the cheap price and queue large orders on the bid
- Large buy size shows up on the level 2
- Price bounces
Professional traders watch the level 2 at support levels. If they see 10K shares on the bid, they know buyers are defending.
Trading order flow
Setup: Big order appears
You see 5,000 shares of buy orders hit the ask rapidly.
Entry: Breakout trade, follow the buyers up.
Stop: Just below the prior support.
Target: Next resistance.
Why it works: Smart money (institutions, algos) move the market. Retail traders follow.
Limitations of order flow
Spoofing: Fake orders appear, then disappear when retail tries to trade them.
Algorithms: Trading algos execute 100s of small orders instead of 1 big order to hide intent.
Retail: At most brokers, you can't see the full level 2 (institutional orders are hidden).
Using order flow in practice
- High-frequency scalpers: Read level 2 every second, trade the tremors.
- Day traders: Check level 2 at support/resistance. If big buy size is there, take the bounce setup.
- Swing traders: Skip level 2. By the time you see the order flow, the move is already underway.
FAQ
Can I trade without seeing order flow?
Yes. Price action and technical analysis work without level 2. But level 2 gives you an edge on short-term trades. It shows you what smart money is doing.
Do all brokers show level 2?
No. Retail brokers often hide institutional orders. Professional platforms show full order depth.
Is order flow the same as volume?
No. Volume is the total traded. Order flow is the direction (which side is aggressive).
Can I see order flow on a chart?
Not directly. But indicators like MACD, RSI, and volume bars reflect order flow indirectly. For true order flow, you need a level 2 tape.
Does order flow predict price?
Short-term yes (next 1-5 minutes). Long-term, price is driven by fundamentals, not order flow. Order flow shows intent; price shows market reality.
