The Stochastic RSI (StochRSI) applies the stochastic formula to the RSI instead of to price. It shows where the RSI sits within its own recent range, from 0 to 1 (or 0 to 100). Readings above 0.8 are called overbought and below 0.2 oversold. It is faster and noisier than RSI, so it works best with a trend filter and confirmation.
The Stochastic RSI is an indicator of an indicator. It takes the RSI and asks where that RSI sits within its own recent high-low range. The result is a faster, more sensitive oscillator. That can help you time entries, and it also produces plenty of false signals.
How it is calculated
- Calculate the standard 14-period RSI of price.
- Over the last 14 RSI values, find the highest and the lowest.
- Apply the stochastic formula:
StochRSI = (RSI − lowest RSI) ÷ (highest RSI − lowest RSI)
The result ranges from 0 to 1 (many platforms show it as 0 to 100). The common defaults are 14, 14, 3, 3: an RSI length of 14, a stochastic length of 14, and a 3-period smoothing for the K line and the D line.
Because it measures the RSI relative to its own range, it can swing from 0 to 1 and back within a few bars. That is why it looks so jumpy next to the plain RSI.
How to read it
| Reading | Common label | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Above 0.8 | Overbought | RSI is near the top of its recent range |
| Below 0.2 | Oversold | RSI is near the bottom of its recent range |
| K line crosses above D | Bullish cross | Momentum turning up |
| K line crosses below D | Bearish cross | Momentum turning down |
"Overbought" and "oversold" do not mean price must reverse. In a strong trend, StochRSI can stay above 0.8 for a long time, and an early sell signal would have you exit a winner.

1. Timing pullbacks in a trend. The most sensible use. In an uptrend, wait for the StochRSI to fall below 0.2 and cross back up, then enter on a confirming candle. This uses it as an entry timer, not a trend signal. Pair it with a moving average such as the 50-day.
2. Spotting momentum shifts. Crossovers of the K and D lines near the extremes can show momentum turning.
3. Divergence. The same idea as RSI divergence, though StochRSI is noisy enough that it is better to use the plain RSI for this. See RSI divergence.
Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths:
- Reacts quickly, so it gives earlier signals than the RSI.
- Easy to read on a 0 to 1 scale.
- Useful for short-term timing in trending markets.
Weaknesses:
- Very noisy. It crosses lines constantly, especially on short timeframes.
- Many false signals in strong trends. It can pin at an extreme for weeks.
- It is derived data. It adds sensitivity, not new information about price.
- Easy to overfit. Shortening the lengths to fit past charts creates unreliable settings.
A simple rule set to test
- Trend filter: price above a rising 50-day moving average.
- Trigger: StochRSI dips below 0.2 then crosses up through 0.2.
- Confirmation: a bullish candle closes.
- Stop below the pullback low. Target at least twice the risk.
- Size from the stop. See position sizing.

RSI vs Stochastic RSI vs Stochastic
| Indicator | Based on | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| RSI | Price changes | Moderate |
| Stochastic oscillator | Where price closed in its range | Fast |
| Stochastic RSI | Where the RSI sits in its own range | Fastest and noisiest |
Using all three together mostly repeats the same signal. Pick one momentum indicator. More on choosing: best trading indicators.
FAQ
What is the Stochastic RSI?
An oscillator that applies the stochastic formula to the RSI, showing where the RSI sits within its own recent range on a 0 to 1 scale.
What are the best Stochastic RSI settings?
The common default is 14, 14, 3, 3. Shorter settings give more signals and more noise. Test any change on data you did not use to choose it.
Is Stochastic RSI better than RSI?
It is faster, not better. It gives earlier signals but many more false ones. Many traders prefer the plain RSI for clarity.
What do 0.8 and 0.2 mean on the Stochastic RSI?
Above 0.8 is considered overbought and below 0.2 oversold, meaning the RSI is near the top or bottom of its recent range. In a strong trend it can stay there.
Can I trade only on Stochastic RSI signals?
Not reliably. Combine it with a trend filter, a level, a confirmation candle and a defined stop-loss.
