VWAP Trading Strategy Explained

VWAP is one of the few indicators used as heavily by institutional traders as retail ones — for good reason, since it directly reflects where real volume has actually traded, not just price.

Part 1. What VWAP Actually Is

The Volume Weighted Average Price is the average price a security has traded at throughout the day, weighted by volume at each price level. Unlike a simple moving average, VWAP gives more weight to price levels where more volume occurred — making it a genuine reflection of "fair value" for that session so far.

Part 2. Why Institutions Use It

Large institutional orders are often benchmarked against VWAP — an execution is considered "good" if it beats VWAP (buying below it, selling above it). This is part of why VWAP tends to act as a real support/resistance level: a meaningful amount of institutional order flow is genuinely anchored to it.

Part 4. Add VWAP Context to Your Setup Score

VWAP is strongest combined with other confluence, exactly the way the Void Engine is built to work:

  1. Note your setup's position relative to VWAP (above/below/reclaiming) alongside market structure and volume in your journal.
  2. Let the Void Engine incorporate VWAP-relative positioning as one of its scored variables rather than trading it in isolation.
  3. Tag trades by "VWAP reclaim," "VWAP rejection," or "VWAP mean-reversion" to see which pattern actually performs for your specific markets.

Part 5. Limitations

VWAP resets each session, so it's most useful for intraday context — it doesn't carry the same meaning across multiple days the way a longer moving average might. It's also a lagging, volume-based average, not a predictive signal — treat crosses and rejections as confluence factors, not standalone triggers.

FAQ

Is VWAP the same as a moving average?

No — VWAP weights price by volume traded at each level within the current session, while a standard moving average weights every period equally regardless of volume.

Does VWAP reset daily?

Yes — VWAP typically resets at the start of each trading session, making it most relevant for intraday analysis rather than multi-day trends.

Why do institutions care about VWAP?

Large orders are often benchmarked against VWAP to judge execution quality, which is part of why real order flow tends to cluster around it, giving it genuine support/resistance significance.
