The futures prop firms traders compare most in 2026 are Topstep (the longest-running, 90/10 split, TopstepX platform), Apex Trader Funding (many accounts, frequent promotions), Take Profit Trader (daily withdrawals on PRO accounts), Lucid Trading (fast payouts, instant-funding options) and Tradeify. The right one depends on how its trailing drawdown, consistency rule and payout rules fit your trading. Verify the current rules before buying.
Futures prop firms let you trade CME contracts like ES, NQ, CL and GC with the firm's capital after passing an evaluation, or sometimes straight away with "instant funding". The market is crowded and changing fast. Consolidation is removing smaller firms, and the CFTC is consulting on how evaluations should be regulated. Here's how the main firms differ, and how to pick one.
How futures prop firms work
- Buy an evaluation (often a monthly subscription) at a set account size, such as $50K.
- Hit a profit target without breaking the rules: daily loss limit, trailing drawdown, contract limits, consistency.
- Get funded, often into a simulated funded account at first, and request payouts under the firm's policy.
Most futures firms require you to be flat before the daily session close. Overnight and weekend holds are generally not allowed.
The main firms at a glance (as of September 2026)
| Firm | Founded | Notable features | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep | 2012 | $50K/$100K/$150K Trading Combines (reported at $49/$99/$199 a month plus activation), end-of-day trailing drawdown, 90/10 split, TopstepX platform | Consistency rule, flat by 3:10 p.m. CT |
| Apex Trader Funding | 2021 | Many accounts per trader, frequent discounts, large payout totals | Payout eligibility rules on the current plan version |
| Take Profit Trader | 2021 | Daily withdrawals on PRO accounts, no consistency rule on PRO plans | Buffer before withdrawals, activation fees |
| Lucid Trading | Newer | Fast payouts, instant-funding and one-day evaluation options | Shorter track record |
| Tradeify | 2024 | Instant funding and evaluation plans | Pricing varies widely by plan |
| Earn2Trade, TradeDay, MyFundedFutures | 2016 / 2020 / 2023 | Alternatives with different rule sets | Compare drawdown and payout terms |
Prices and rules change often, sometimes monthly. Treat this table as a starting point and read the firm's current rules page before paying.

Trailing drawdown. The maximum loss usually trails your highest balance. End-of-day trailing only updates at the close. Intraday trailing follows unrealised peaks, so giving back an open profit can breach you. Static vs trailing drawdown explains the maths.
Daily loss limit. A fixed dollar amount per day, such as $1,000 on a $50K account. Your per-trade risk should be a small fraction of it.
Contract limits. For example, 5 minis or 50 micros on a $50K account. Oversizing is an automatic violation.
Consistency. Limits on how much of your profit can come from one day. Traders with occasional large days should favour firms without it.
News rules. Some firms restrict trading around major releases on funded accounts.
Evaluation vs instant funding
| Evaluation | Instant funding | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower monthly fee | Higher one-time fee |
| Time to funded | Days to weeks | Immediate |
| Rules | Pass a target first | Tighter drawdown, payout conditions |
| Best for | Traders with a proven process who want lower cost | Experienced traders confident in their risk control |
Industry reports suggest instant funding is becoming the majority model in 2026. It's convenient, but tighter drawdowns leave less room for error.
Platforms
Most futures prop firms support Tradovate and NinjaTrader (same brokerage backend, owned by Kraken since 2025), often TradingView through Tradovate, and firm-specific platforms like TopstepX. Rithmic-based platforms (R Trader, Quantower, Sierra Chart) are available at many firms. See Best Futures Trading Platforms.
Risk plan for a $50K evaluation (example)
- Drawdown: $2,000 trailing. Daily loss limit: $1,000.
- Risk per trade: $150–200 (about 10% of drawdown), with 3 losses maximum per day.
- Instrument: MES or MNQ micros to size precisely.
- Stop trading for the day after −$400 or +$800.
- No trades 5 minutes before or after red-folder news.
That plan survives a normal losing streak and removes the need to "get it back" on a bad day. More in how to pass a prop firm challenge.
How to choose
- List your normal trading: instruments, hold time, average and worst daily P&L.
- Remove firms whose drawdown type or consistency rule would have breached you in the last three months.
- Prefer a long payout history over the lowest price.
- Buy one small account first. Scale across firms only after a payout.
TRADZY's Prop Firm Tracker monitors trailing drawdown, daily loss and consistency live against your firm's rules, and the TradLog shows which setups actually pass evaluations.
FAQ
What is the best futures prop firm in 2026?
It depends on your style. Topstep has the longest track record, Take Profit Trader and Lucid are known for fast withdrawals, and Apex suits traders running several accounts. Check each firm's current drawdown, consistency and payout rules against your own trading.
Are futures prop firms regulated?
The futures markets are regulated, but evaluation-based prop firms have operated in a grey zone. In 2026 the CFTC opened a consultation on how evaluations should be treated, so rules may change.
Can you hold futures overnight at a prop firm?
Usually not. Most futures prop firms require all positions to be closed before the session close each day.
How much does a futures prop firm evaluation cost?
Entry-level $50K evaluations commonly cost from about $50 to a few hundred dollars, often as a monthly subscription. Some firms add activation fees when you pass.
What platform do futures prop firms use?
Most support Tradovate, NinjaTrader and TradingView (via Tradovate), and many support Rithmic-based platforms. Some, like Topstep, have their own platform.
