There is no single best prop firm. The right one depends on what you trade and how. In 2026 the firms traders shortlist most are FTMO, The5ers and FundedNext for forex and CFDs, and Topstep, Apex Trader Funding, Take Profit Trader and Lucid Trading for CME futures. Choose on payout track record, drawdown type, daily loss limit, consistency rules and news restrictions, not on the headline account size.
Prop firm marketing is built around big numbers: "$200K account", "90% split", "scale to $2M". None of that matters if the rules don't fit your trading or the firm doesn't pay. 2026 has been a year of consolidation. Several smaller firms have closed, some without warning, and US regulators are looking harder at the industry. That makes choosing carefully more important than ever.
The firms traders shortlist most (2026)
These are the names that appear most often in trader comparisons and payout discussions this year. This isn't an endorsement, and rules and prices change often, so verify everything on the firm's own site before you buy.

The rules that decide whether you pass
Drawdown type. This is the most important rule, and the most misunderstood.
- Static drawdown: a fixed floor below your starting balance.
- Trailing drawdown: the floor rises as your balance peaks, intraday or at the end of the day.
- End-of-day trailing is usually more forgiving than intraday trailing, which can lock in unrealised peaks.
Read static vs trailing drawdown before you pick an account.
Daily loss limit. Often calculated from the start-of-day balance or equity. A limit that counts open losses can breach you mid-trade.
Consistency rules. Many firms cap how much of your total profit can come from one day. That punishes traders whose edge produces occasional big days. See prop firm consistency rules.
News and holding rules. Some accounts ban trading around high-impact news, or holding overnight or over weekends. Most futures firms require you to be flat before the session close.
Profit target and minimum days. Targets are commonly 6–10% on forex challenges. Futures evaluations set a fixed dollar target.

- Payout frequency and minimums: weekly, bi-weekly or on request, and the buffer you must build first.
- Profit split: 80–90% is standard, and some firms offer 100% of the first amount.
- Payout history: look for a long, verifiable record, not just marketing numbers.
- Terms on "prohibited strategies": vague terms give the firm room to deny payouts. Read them.
Red flags
- Very new firm with extremely generous rules and heavy influencer marketing.
- Terms that let the firm reclassify your trading as "gambling" or "abuse" without clear definitions.
- Frequent, unannounced rule changes.
- Payouts that slow down or need repeated "reviews".
- No clear company registration or support contacts.
2026 context: several operators have wound down, including at least one that stopped processing withdrawals without warning. The CFTC is also consulting on how futures prop firm evaluations should be regulated. Spreading your risk across firms, and withdrawing regularly, is sensible.
Forex/CFD firms vs futures firms
| Forex/CFD prop firms | Futures prop firms | |
|---|---|---|
| Instruments | FX pairs, index CFDs, gold, crypto CFDs | CME contracts: ES/MES, NQ/MNQ, CL, GC and more |
| Regulation of the market | OTC, via the firm's liquidity provider | Exchange-traded, centrally cleared |
| Typical risk rules | Percentage daily loss and max loss | Dollar trailing drawdown, contract caps |
| US access | Varies by firm | Common |
How to choose: a 5-step checklist
- Match the market. Trade futures? Use a futures firm. Trade gold and FX? Use a CFD firm.
- Match the drawdown to your style. Scalpers with tight stops can handle trailing drawdown. Swing traders usually need static or end-of-day rules.
- Stress-test the daily loss limit. Take your worst normal day in the last three months. Would it breach?
- Check consistency and news rules against your real trade history.
- Start small. Buy the smallest account that fits your normal risk, and prove the process first.
Then trade the challenge with a written plan. How to pass a prop firm challenge walks through the risk math.
TRADZY's Prop Firm Tracker loads your firm's rules and tracks daily loss, drawdown and consistency live, so you see a breach coming before it happens.
FAQ
Which prop firm is best for beginners?
One with simple rules, a long payout record and a low-cost small account. Many beginners start with a two-step forex challenge or a $50K futures evaluation, risking a small fraction of the drawdown per trade.
Are prop firms legit?
Many are legitimate businesses, but the model depends on most traders failing evaluations, and some firms have closed or delayed payouts. Choose firms with a long track record and clear terms.
What is the easiest prop firm to pass?
None is easy. The one whose rules fit your existing trading is easiest for you. Check drawdown type, daily loss and consistency rules against your real results.
Do prop firms pay out?
Established firms regularly pay traders, but payouts depend on following every rule. Read the payout policy and the prohibited-strategy terms before you start.
Can US traders use prop firms?
Yes. Futures prop firms commonly accept US traders. Some forex/CFD firms restrict US residents, so check the firm's country list.
