How investing works in Canada
Shares in Canada trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange. To buy them you need a broker that is able to trade on that exchange, and you pay in CAD.
The regulator is the Canadian Securities Administrators (with provincial regulators). It licenses brokers and publishes the rules for listed companies, so checking that a broker is registered with it is the first step.
Before you invest, read the rules for foreign investors in Canada: some markets limit who may buy, and some restrict how money leaves the country. Our guide on foreign investor rules covers what to check.
Prices are quoted in CAD. If you live in another currency, a move in the exchange rate can change your return even when the share price does not move. See currency risk for foreign stocks.
